Shepherd Dog

Corbin the Dog needs a home

CORBIN is a gorgeous all-black German Shepherd who loves his people and family, and gets along with other large dogs.  He's fun-loving and has lots of energy, yet is great in the house and settles nicely.

People:   Corbin really seems to just enjoy people.  He's got a great GSD bark so that strangers coming to the door will know he's there, but once they come inside he just wants attention.  He also loves his carers, whether it's his foster family or the staff who so lovingly took care of him while he spent several months in boarding waiting for a foster family.  He was actually a favorite of the staff at boarding because he's such an upbeat kind of guy.

Kids:  Corbin was raised in a family with children and while we haven't seen him around small kids ourselves we believe he is good with them.  We have seen him around older children (young teens and up) and he is very good.

Other Animals:  Corbin gets along with other large dogs and particpated in play groups while in boarding for several months.  He now lives with another GSD and second large dog in his foster home and does fine.  But he can not be around small animals, including small dogs and cats.  He has a high prey drive and requires strong leadership on walks or when around small animals.

In fact, his high prey drive is the reason his life-long family abandoned him after raising him from a puppy and keeping him 6 years.  We don't know the details, but apparently a neighbor's small dog was in Corbin's 'territory' and he shook the dog so hard that it sadly died.  Although he'd been fine for 6 years, the family chose to abandon him to a public shelter, where he was at very high risk, istead of making sure their fence was secure and he couldn't get loose.  Yet Corbin does beautifully in his foster home with a strong leader, where he lives with two other large dogs and goes on walks.

General:   He's house-trained and crate-trained, and has excellent house manners.  Corbin can be a little bit mischeivous too - he loves to steal the socks of the teenager in his foster home.  Like we said, he's an upbeat and fun guy ;-)

Fencing:  He must have a securely fenced yard with a 6 ft fence in good repair.

OVERALL:  Corbin is a gorgeous boy who's loving, affectionate, upbeat and fun. He's crate trained and house trained, and has good house manners.  His only issue is his high prey drive, which means two things:  1)  he can not be around small animals, and 2) he requires a strong leader when on walks.  He would do well as an only pet or living with other sociable large dogs.

If you're looking for a gorgeous, out-of-the-puppy-stage buddy with a great personality,
and are a strong leader with no other small pets,
CORBIN may be the best friend you're looking for!

CORBIN'S ADOPTION FEE:   $300

This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

PLEASE READ THIS:

  1. We're picky about our adopters!  GSDs are not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort and training.  They shed all year round.  They're big and scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and are usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time applying.

  2. All MOGS dogs must be inside family pets. We do not adopt to outdoor only homes.

  3. When you're not home, you must put your dog indoors (NOT in the yard).  One adopted MoGS dog died after the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, someone opened the gate, and she was hit by a car.  Privacy fences get broken into, gates are opened, thieves steal dogs. NEVER leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!

  4. You're required to make a lifetime commitment.  The minute you adopt, it is your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.  Only you can do that.

  5. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.

  6. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?  If you move?  If you have a child?

  7. You're making a lifetime commitment to a MOGS Dog.   We expect you to keep it!  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
